The Top Places on my Wish List

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about my favorite places in the world, so it only makes sense that I now write about the places I wanna go to the most.

So in no particular order, here are the places that are making me swoon the most right now:

1. Caño Cristales, Colombia

Colombia

How is Colombia so beautiful?!?! Known as the river of five colors, Caño Cristales is one of our many natural wonders I am dying to see. My bank account has a little spot just for this.

2. Saint Petersburg, Russia

Russia

Russian literature has given me a tragically romantic idea of this city that no amount of realism will shake!

3. Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

Ecuador

This is more of a facing my fears one. I don’t know why but I despise iguanas, and in the Galapagos they have sea iguanas…giant.sea.iguanas. It’s the stuff of nightmares and I have to face it. Also, I wanna see all the other incredible animals that don’t haunt my dreams!

4. Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

Bolivia

Another place that has a space in my bank account, especially since one of my best friends keeps inviting me to Bolivia. To be honest, every time I see a picture of my friends at the salt lakes I’m so jealous I kinda wanna punch them (:

5. Phuket, Thailand

Thailand

Everyone I know says that Phuket is the most beautiful province in Thailand so I would love to spend some time traveling around and doing my best to avoid tourists.

6. The Malaysian Jungle

best of Malaysia

I gotta admit Malaysia wasn’t that high on my list until I got a job there. Although life happened and I had to turn it down, the reading and research I did while preparing for the job moved it to the top of my list. I don’t regret how things turned out but now I feel the great urge to spend some time in the Malaysian jungle.

7. The Grand Canyon, USA

Grand Canyon

I still can’t wrap my head around how the Grand Canyon is even real.

8. Troy, Turkey

Turkey

So you understand what this would mean to me I’ll confess that when I was 12 years old I had a notebook on which I wrote notes on everything I read about the Trojan War…This clearly shows that a) I’ve always been a giant nerd, and b) I love Greek mythology and my favorite myth has always been the Trojan war. I mean, for most of human history we thought Troy was a myth and now we can just walk right in!!! I might literally faint when I see it.

9. Santorini, Greece

Greece

Just look at that! It’s the stuff of dreams!

10. Lake Retba, Senegal

I had a Senegalese friend in Bordeaux that sold me his beautiful country at any chance he got. The place that intrigued me the most from the pictures he showed me, however, was Lake Retba, also known as the pink river. Located in the Cape Vert peninsula I feel like I need to see it with my own eyes sooner rather than later!

Which places are at the top of your list?

  1. Let me know if you end up going to Salar de Uyuni/SW Bolivia or St. Petersburg – I have mega tips for both. I should warn you though: St. Petersburg is fascinating, truly, but I do think your tragically romantic idea of the city might be shaken if you go and look more deeply into things. Well, it happened to me, anyway. 🙂

Also, if you’re into Russian lit, you should read Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente! It is not Russian lit but it is based on Russian fairytales AND is partially set in then-Leningrad, and I found it so beautiful I re-read it less than a year later. I also have to recommend it in any somewhat-related space, so here you go!

    1. Really? that’d be awesome!! I’m actually speaking to my friend right now about going to Bolivia, I’ll let you know because I’d love some tips!

Oh that books sounds amazing, I will definitely look for it :)!!

      1. Yes, feel free to email me or anything (email address is on my blog)! I got some great tips about visiting Salar de Uyuni from a friend before I went that I think made my trip loads better so I would be happy to pass them along. 🙂

Let me know if you find and read it because I would love to discuss!
